![]() ![]() William was left cooling his heels waiting for a favourable breeze while Hardrada swooped in. In a normal year, the winds blow first out of the south and then out of the north around England. And there are still independent Viking raiders around to cause trouble for anyone who looks vulnerable. English Earls in Wessex and Mercia, the inhabitants of the Danelaw, Anglia, and more than a few potential foreign factions who'd like tto get involved - Scotland, Denmark, some of the Welsh kingdoms, and even some continental players might want to take action against Normandy now the Duke is away. So in early 1067 you have Harald holding York and the surrounding area, William in Kent, Sussex, and that region, and then you have to consider other possible factions. If London shuts it's gates then William isn't going to be able to siege it down in winter, and it's pretty well fortified around that time so storming the walls could go very wrong. ![]() Harald will have to consolidate in the North, and William hasn't defeated Harold so he's not the only obvious ruler for a lot of the country. If Harald wins at Stamford Bridge and kills Harold, and then William lands in Kent, there's no reason to expect either to hurry to face the other. I've actually taken part in a wargaming campaign with a very similar premise. ![]()
